International Day of Older Persons

Saturday, 1 October, is the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. It’s a day to celebrate the resilience of older persons in a changing world.

Older people contribute in many ways to their families and communities. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we all saw the heightened limitations older people faced and how their contributions and lifestyles were at risk.

So we must recognise this important group of people. Not just in our families but throughout the world. Population ageing is a major social transformation in our lifetime, affecting nearly all sectors of society. The United Nations state that “over the next three decades, the number of older persons worldwide is projected to more than double, reaching more than 1.5 billion persons in 2050”.

Check out this video from the United Nations, where a group of extraordinary centenarians share their stories and views about ageing.
